Welcome Carol. We're so glad to have you today. And we would love to hear some more about what you do and why about this fuel body feed soul ministry and

[00:01:34] Track 1: how that came about, 

[00:01:36] Carol Bevil: So it came about, um, completely because of the Holy Spirit. I was planning on writing a purely nutrition blog because I had spent the first probably 20 years of my career, not as a believer. And then when I became a believer, you know, I was totally bought in on the fact that you need to separate Your faith from your work environment, right?

And so I headed to a coffee shop meeting with a young girl who was going to help me design a blog and really, truly with the intent of just focusing on the nutrition from the worldview. And in that conversation, I had this full stop of just Romans 12, 2 and Matthew 6, 33, just, you know, where am I seeking?

Where am I advising people to seek? It was just really this convicting moment about being invested in teaching women to look in the mirror and look at the world. And just a really humbling moment where it was like that it should not be about superficial change. And then I just kind of stopped and I dug into that and I looked into that and I realized that where my heart was now as a believer, as a daughter of the king was to help women truly break free.

of these diet culture strongholds. and I had been a part of that system, getting women anchored, and in bondage to that. And, from there it was just the Lord just leading and directing me, kind of set me off on a path of writing these books about body image, about how we view our identity.

Where we spend our time, what we're fixated on that Matthew 6 33, but first seek the kingdom of God. And then all the things, then the fruit of the spirit. So it was like, am I helping women feel the fruit of the spirit experience the fruit of the spirit in their relationship with food and their body image.

And that is where fuel, body feed soul found it's. and that is where I launched the Instagram and God has been really good. in growing that and just really helping women break free from the things that we toil after. 

[00:03:46] Stephanie Hodges: we are in such a similar place and background because I also had that background in the fitness industry, personal training, group fitness. It's all about image, all about performance. And it's true that most people I talked to, they do want to lose weight. And when I was back. getting my certifications, getting my master's degree.

The common statistic at the time was that 30 percent of people in America were overweight and another 30 percent were obese, but in just a short time in less than, you know, 20 years, those statistics are now that 40 percent of people are obese and another 30 percent on top of that are overweight. And so of course it's common.

That people are looking to lose weight. and for so many of them that I come across, it's kind of this perpetual struggle. It's like, what should I How should I eat? How do I get myself to eat the way I'm supposed to eat? And why do you think that that is that healthy eating and this weight management?

It's that the trends are going in the wrong direction. And what, what can

we do about 

[00:04:52] Carol Bevil: Yeah. So I want to start with, you know, I have spent my year, my career as you have, as a personal trainer, as a cycling coach and as a nutritionist. and absolutely, I agree with you that weight loss is probably the primary concern of 99 percent of my clients. And I also want to say that I think that everyone is fearfully and wonderfully made.

Everyone is beautiful, but I'm not a proponent of everyone is healthy, being morbidly obese, putting your body under the stressor of carrying unnecessary weight, is damaging to your health. Fixating on your weight to get to a vanity weight. That is not your natural God designed image is also equally damaging, I think, emotionally and psychologically.

But for me, you know, the, the transfer of thought that I had was, okay, let's look at diet culture. Diet culture statistics are that 98. 6 percent of all. Dieters put all of the weight plus more back on within two years. And it's designed that way, right? It's designed to be a cyclical market so that you have to keep buying back in.

And they're smart enough to know that they're going to change the trend. So you think you're doing something new, either they change the language or they change what they're eliminating or what they're making you fearful of to get you to buy back in. And so then I started thinking about, well, you know, let's.

Look, God designed our body. What does God have to say about how we nourish our body? And he covered what took me multiple years of schooling in, in two verses in, in chapter one of Genesis verse 29 and in chapter nine, verse three, and basically all nutrition sciences supports what is biblically sound.

And that is that the bulk of our intake should be from produce. , things that grow fruit of the tree grains, that should be the bulk of our intake. And then after the fall, we can now eat every living, moving thing. So that's protein. And when you look at that, I started thinking, what's an easy way to discuss that.

So I thought God is the author of balance. And he created our bodies to function nutritionally as a three legged stool, the diet industry and nutrition science, it's macrobiotics, so that three legged stool is carbohydrates, fats, and protein, which is everything that's covered in those two verses in Genesis.

When we eat those in the proper balance, we don't have to think about being in balance. They balance us. We sit on this very stable three legged stool. It doesn't take our thoughts captive. It doesn't take our emotions, our desires captive because we are well nourished. So that controls hunger and cravings.

We are well energized. So that creates balance in our energy levels and our ability to sleep. Well, all of these things fall into line. What does diet culture do? Diet culture is constantly telling us. to shorten or eliminate one of the legs of this stool. So fats were demonized. Then carbohydrates were demonized.

Then protein is demonized. In the age of the internet, all three are demonized and lauded and worshipped at the exact same time because now you can pick and choose what, what leg of your stool you want to shorten or eliminate. Where do you want your fear and your fixation to go? But the problem with that is, is when we're manipulating what God designed through willpower, which is a whole nother issue, we're now sitting on a stool that takes all of our energy, all of our thoughts.

So all of our hearts, all of our minds, all of our strength to keep it in balance because we've created imbalance. So when people come to me and I support the need for weight loss. when people come to me and say, what should I eat? What shouldn't I eat? The first place I start is, are we eating enough of the things that put your body in balance?

First, before we start making any changes, dealing with what emotionally triggers you or situationally triggers you, before we get into the minutia of it, first, we've got to get your stool back in balance. And that's very simply about 30 to 33 percent of each of those categories, right? That's a balanced stool.

And that's actually how, prior to the diet industry. So the 1950s, early 1960s, that is actually how America ate, and America did not have a weight problem.

[00:09:30] Stephanie Hodges: Yeah, it's such an interesting trend. And we've seen that over just the past decades, how much it flipped from fat being horrible for you and everything was fat free to now keto diet is the biggest thing. And, but even I feel like it's already kind of reached its peak and going down because of exactly what you said.

These are only short term solutions. They're not long term healthy lifestyle habits. And you know, can you say from your perspective and working with clients and seeing people, what are some of the detrimental effects of this diet culture

on the individual?

[00:10:05] Carol Bevil: Yeah, so I, I can tell you that from a, from a spiritual point of view, I think the most detrimental effect is that you are sowing seeds into fear. because you are fearful of food. So you are living from a place of being fearful. also you are being told that you to combat desire or temptation that you need to white knuckle and dig into willpower and willpower is something that God gave us as a gift.

Right? When we are given something that's tempting, desirable to the eyes and good for food, that's not good for us necessarily. He's given us a moment of willpower where we go to turn our attention back to him, to seek him first, to give us armor, to deal with that temptation. But it was just designed to redirect us.

It was not designed to be the foundation from which we function. So in one of the chapters of my book, I was talking about getting that mindset from no, no, no, to, Oh, Oh, Oh, back to a fixation on God. I would also think physically, I mean, through the course of my career. So I, it's been about 30, 30 plus years, I have seen there are diets.

that are actually grounded and healthy. Even if they get you to over fixate on counting or toiling, they are fundamentally healthy. But then these lifestyle diets, these hardcore restriction diets, whatever they're restricting throws our body into horrible, horrible imbalance physically. So we see the detriments of diets where they're telling you to eat.

No carbohydrates, no gluten, and we have an issue with increased heart attacks. We have increased depression, increased anxiety, increased lack of ability to sleep, and mental clarity. They actually celebrate, Oh, keto flu. Why would you want to put your body into a flu like state. it is completely damaging to our thyroids long term to overly calorically restrict.

And then the most detrimental thing that I've seen into the course of my career has been this move towards what they call clean eating. you know, no processed food, nothing over this many ingredients at the same time that they're telling you, don't eat this, but then we're going to give you this supplement or this product that has five, you know, drink almond milk that has 73 ingredients, but don't drink dairy milk.

So dairy is not clean, but almond milk is. But what that has done is I think that it is in my daughter's generation, you know, I have three, an adult daughter and two teenage daughters. This idea of clean eating has created a whole new brand of disordered eating, of dysfunctional anorectic behaviors because they are now so fearful of everything in their food, everything in their water that they eventually trigger an OCD or an underlying stress disorder and they become anorectic.

And so there's so many, you know, the enemy is constantly going to do nothing. But try to deceive us to get us to fall into a pit of despair and all of these diets create whether it's emotional or physical, they create these pits of despair because they are rooted in fear. And so I do, I, I think that you can find ways to eat.

And if it produces the fruit of the spirit in you, it produces peace. It produces joy. It produces a feeling of love and forbearance and patience. And then I would say, then that is the way that God wants you to be eating. But the majority of time we are eating in a way that is rooted in fear into putting us into a state of restriction, which then is going to cause us physical and emotional harm down the road as we stay there.

And the worst part is, is. You can't keep the weight loss off. It's not even, it's not even effective. 

[00:13:56] Stephanie Hodges: Yeah. And with people, I see them struggling so much in this area because eating is something you have to do every day. To stay alive. And so where there might be other situations where you have conflict or you're fearful or, run into other obstacles, you can usually take break from that, right? It might be something you deal with only at work or only when you visit your in laws or, you know, whatever the case might be.

But when you're talking about food, this is something that you're coming up and confronting Continually throughout the day. And so if you are captive in a spirit of fear, or if you have a mindset around it that causes you anxiety, then that's just a perpetual

state that you're going to find 

[00:14:38] Carol Bevil: Yeah, I absolutely love that you say that because it's one of the things when I've dealt over the years with morbidly obese clients is getting them to understand that when you have an addiction, let's say to drugs or alcohol, you can actually go cold turkey. You can actually choose to never ingest drugs or alcohol.

And as difficult as that is to get to a place of sobriety, You don't have to have that substance, you know, you don't have to consume a little bit of alcohol But with food when you have food addictions or emotional addictions to food You cannot live a life without having to eat food You have to interact with that every single day every day of your life And so then it's getting into that last of the fruit of the spirit.

It's taking us down the line of that spirit of self control. And, you know, I always think of it this way. If God is the author of balance and the enemy is the author of imbalance, the enemy is always going to want to pull us to extremes. So whether we're gluttonous, right? Or we're the most willful dieter in the world, and we live on the side of legalism and restriction.

He's pulling us out of balance. The Lord wants us to walk a narrow path in between that of moderation. So it's about choosing to understand that, listen, Proverbs is correct. You know that I can eat a little bit of honey, but if I eat too much of it, it's going to make me sick, you know, to get that path of there are things that are good, but things in excess are not always good for me.

So to get into that mindset of how do I get a spirit of self control? What are the steps that I need to take to start thinking in terms of food as moderation? And again, I say it comes back to that three legged stool. If you are balanced nutritionally, you are eating enough. nutrient dense food where your body is well nourished, then you are going to limit your emotional cravings.

You're going to have a spirit of self control with them. If you eat enough protein, carbohydrates, and fats and the proper balance with each other, then you are going to be able to start trusting your hunger. Rather than trying to willfully ignore your hunger or being forced to eat because some diet told you you have to eat six small meals a day or you can never skip breakfast and then the other diet tells you breakfast is the worst thing in the world that you can eat.

So we've completely disrupted the fact that God has given us this internal spirit of self control through our hunger and hormone craving clues that we've disrupted that we can't trust them anymore. We can't trust them anymore. So, you know, always, I think that it's like we have to eat. And so then we have to say to ourself, how do I get my body so well nourished that food becomes something that is not driving my every waking thought.

And I can exercise a spirit of self control rather than white knuckling willpower. Because you know what that leads to. You've done this your whole career. It only leads to the restriction binge cycle. Willpower only kicks you into a restriction binge lifestyle. And that's what the diet culture wants you to do.

the lifestyle that the diet culture actually does completely successfully is a lifestyle of restriction and binge. 

[00:18:02] Stephanie Hodges: Definitely. That point about moderation is so key because it is something that we're up against in our culture today. There's food everywhere, everywhere you turn. There's food, there's snacks, there's huge portion sizes. And so even what some of these diets promise is, Oh, well, as long as you restrict these certain things, then you can eat as much as you want of pork rinds or whatever crazy food that doesn't make sense.

You're like, no, that's not a healthy food. That doesn't make sense that you should eat two pounds of bacon a day. even just logically, like when you say that to someone like, how does that make sense? But we do have to face the fact that. We're going to have to have some moderation. And a part of that is just 

it's a counter cultural move anymore. It's to say, Hey, every time I sit down in front of the TV, does it mean I have to or I don't have to finish everything that's on my plate? Because the portion sizes are only getting bigger, but where that freedom comes from too, is what you're saying. It's getting back in touch with your body and your actual hunger cues to where we're not just eating out of habit, or we're not just eating.

because the food is there, but we're truly becoming more in tune with our body. Can you speak to that part of the

[00:19:15] Track 1: process? 

[00:19:16] Carol Bevil: Yeah, absolutely. I think it's always, you know, the biggest thing for me when I had this sort of aha convicting moment with the Holy Spirit, just this real humbling moment of what is it that you are glorifying Carol, you know, with your career. And when I had that moment, I did realize, that God is always going to have us walking in his way.

And the enemy is always going to have us walking in the opposite direction. God and so countercultural and what culture is going to tell you, if you look at the world, if you're unclear about how to get back to where you need to be, what is the direction that the world is selling? 'cause it's so loud, it's so clear, it's so constant.

And what the world is constantly selling is restriction and binge. What the world is constantly selling is a spirit of license and legalism. Not moderation. So how do I get to that? Well, the diet culture tells me to either eliminate or restrict all of this and overeat all of this, right? Get that three legged stool out of balance because that's going to put me in the stronghold of restriction and binge.

So what is it that would God would say? God would say, okay, rather than thinking about what you should be afraid of and eliminate or restrict or what you should worship. And start consuming copious amounts of out of balance. What if you just ate all three of the major food groups, carbohydrates, protein, and fats in equal parts.

You just get to a place where you're not thinking about eliminating or counting and overeating, but you just think about, okay, my plate or my meal needs to have a source of protein, a source of carbohydrates and a source. And I need to make sure that at every meal, whether I'm a person that eats six small meals or one large meal or three meals, whatever it is, that plate is balanced the way that is.

Once that happens, I absolutely promise you that when you start eating that way, your body is going to have all of the nutrients that it needs, the vitamins and the minerals that it needs to level your cravings. Because that's what causes us to crave. That's what kicks us into binge mode is that we are not well nourished.

So then our body is lacking something that whether we know what it is or not, whether it's magnesium or it's vitamin D, it's going to create in us a craving. And then if we eat all three of those groups, I always tell everybody that. Listen, carbohydrates and I'm talking about produce fruits and vegetables and grains and whole grains, things that grow .

When you're eating those, all carbohydrates are sugar, but those carbohydrates are coming to you with fiber. So when you eat carbohydrates, which is your primary source of fuel, it's the way God designed your body. It's what your brain feeds off of predominantly. When you eat fiber, rich carbohydrates. They keep you full.

They control the amount that you eat. Then if you add protein, protein is slow to gastric empty. So it takes a long time to digest. So you feel full almost instantly and then you stay full. And then of course fats make you emotionally satisfied because that's where all the flavor flavor is. So then you're emotionally satisfied.

So when you eat those things, they're making you well fueled. So you eliminate cravings, but they're also starting to teach you when you are full, when you've had enough. And you can walk away and the more you practice balanced eating, the more you're going to have to stop worrying about, am I eating too much or should I not eat that?

Because you will be able to eat honey, you know, that I just want to stick with what the Bible says. You'll be able to eat all the desserts, all the sweet things. that you love and that are a part of life. God gave us good things, but you'll be able to eat them in a way that you don't overeat them. You'll know, okay, I've had enough.

That was great. Rather than trying to control how much dessert you eat because you eliminate it or you restrict it And that's always gonna make you want to overeat it And if you're doing that in a body that's not well nourished and not well fed you're gonna overeat it Anyway, you know because those types of food are designed to see.

Oh, I ate the whole thing I didn't even realize I ate the whole thing so I think in order to be able to Have a spirit of self control. First, you actually have to start making sure am I eating enough of God's good provision so that I have the foundation from which to then say, Oh, I actually am hungry.

Oh, I'm craving that. Why am I craving that? And then that takes us a step further down. Is this situational? Is this habitual? Is this emotional? But we start with the habitual, the situational and the emotional before we're balanced. And it never works in the inverse. That's how the enemy wants you to go.

You have to start on God's foundation. And then all of those problems, all of those strongholds will already be either destroyed or weakened where you can start addressing them one by one and getting them into a place of moderation rather than something that controls you.

[00:24:39] Stephanie Hodges: Right. And everything you're saying too, is it's a process and that's the other lie that diet culture feeds us is that, Oh no, you can do this. Instantly, you can fix your life in 30 days, but everything that you're saying, like this isn't going to go away and you're going to pass through different phases of life, you know, and for women, if you haven't had children yet and you become pregnant and then your postpartum, and then later in life, you go through menopause.

These are all these different seasons of life where your body might react to food differently. You might be experiencing things in your health. And so then some of these issues can rise back up again. But knowing the truth and having gone through the process and having a greater understanding of what's going on beneath the surface, all these things that you're talking about will really help you and be a strong reminder to help us navigate those different seasons of life. And I really wanted to touch on one of your three books is breakthrough six weeks to demolish diet culture strongholds. And of course I recommend that everybody get this book and all the books, but in particular the six weeks in which you're demolishing the diet culture strongholds. Can you just give us a brief glimpse into

what that process 

looks like for people? 

[00:25:53] Carol Bevil: So I, I designed it. I think that, you know, we do best in community. We do best with the accountability of friends that are going to hold us upright because it is very difficult to walk against culture. It is extremely difficult to not get caught up in what all of a sudden is the greatest trend. Like, you know, like right now the biggest trend is the semi glutides, these peptides, Ozembek, Munjaro.

All of these things and women are seeing, you know, it's difficult to be eating right. And going through this process to get a spirit of moderation, that's going to carry you from the cradle to the grave rather than getting, oh, in, in, you know, 10 days I lost seven pounds. It's very difficult to. Arm yourself against that because that is the world that we live in.

So one, I wanted to design it where yes, you can do it on your own, but it's, it's put together like a Bible study that you can do it as a group of women holding each other accountable. And then the way that it's structured is that we have just a very good kind of lesson. What are these three macro nutrients that balance your body?

What is this three legged stool that God designed you to. Sit on nutritionally. What are each of those things? What do they consist of? Like the names of the foods? What do they do for you? Like what are they actually doing in your body because I think when we understand the why behind it it helps us Release ourselves from from the cultural lie about what it's doing to you So there's chapters on each of those Macro nutrients and then we have a mindset Part , what is the armor coming from scripture?

And in God, what is the mindset? What is the position of your heart? How do you take the truth of what these foods are doing your body? And then how do you put that where you're seeking the kingdom first so that you are built up in him? You know, all things are possible, but the part that a lot of people drop out is all things are possible through Jesus Christ alone.

And so we need to be anchored always at the foot of the cross. In our community so that when we start to waver or start to wander, our friends guide us back. Where are you looking? Are you looking to the kingdom of God or are you looking to the kingdom of man? And that helps keep us in check as our body kind of unravels the lies of what the enemy has put us into, both from a point of cravings and hunger back into a place of balance.

So we have the time to walk that out and also in a place where you are emotionally and spiritually kind of steeled against the enemy's lies. Because as you are going through this process and you're like, You know, my girlfriend just lost, she's doing diet X and she's lost 17 pounds and I've lost a pound and a half.

How do I break free from being concerned about the number on the scale and trust that when I'm in balance that my body will not hold on to weight that is not it's to hold on to? Does that make sense? And so that's the process of the book. I tell a lot of women, you know, it's not a diet. It's not eat this and don't eat this.

It's like, these are the foods. And these are the way that our body responds to these different types of foods. This is why you eat this. And this is how it's going to make your body feel after you eat it so that you can be prepared in the truth because it's only when we're standing on the solid rock of God's truth that then we can battle our emotions.

You know, God gave us our emotions to help us and to let us enjoy life so much more fully, but we are not a beast. We are not the tail. We are the head. We are in the image of God. We are not an animal. We don't have to pursue and be led by our emotions. We have to learn how to keep them in control so that they produce things in us that are good and praiseworthy and excellent.

And I would say that's true in every area of life, right? Um, you know, that maturity that the world lacks now is that, you know, I don't feel like exercising. It's not convenient to exercise. Well, is that a feeling that's serving something that's excellent, praiseworthy, and good? You know, is your life about entertainment?

You have to get into a place where it's like, I shouldn't need external motivation internally. I should know that I'm, I'm to honor my body by doing good, right things. And, and I, I think that the book hopefully helps create a platform for which women will then say, okay. I need the Bible. I need that shield and that sword in my relationship with food and body image.

That's where I've gone wrong. It's not the internet. You know, it's not the self help book that sells a million copies in the first week because it's super, super popular. It's not the cheap fix of the right pill or the right injection to circumvent my system because eventually the only thing that's standing between me and legalism is.

The spirit within me, it's not these external things that are only going to help me temporarily. And that takes us back to Romans 12 to, which is, you know, do not conform to the patterns of the world. Right. But be transformed by the renewing right of your heart and your mind. So be transformed. 

And that's hopefully what the book is helping women do to get their eye off of superficial change and rooted into God's truth so that they truly transform from within. Amen. And then. Their external will change.
