Throughout all three of my pregnancies, it’s been extremely important to me to continue working out and staying fit. I know that my prenatal workouts were instrumental in helping me lose the baby weight and get back in shape within 6 months to a year postpartum.
I’m currently halfway through my third pregnancy, and would like to share six of my favorite prenatal workout DVDs with you. I have also tried some DVDs that I did not care for, but I don’t want to post a “do not buy” list because we are all different – what didn’t work for me might still work for someone else.
However, the following DVDs I do wholeheartedly recommend you add to your prenatal workout library!
1. Summer Sanders’ Prenatal Workout
This DVD contains three workouts, one for each trimester. Each has an option for express or full workout (approx 20 minutes vs 40-45). The only equipment required is an exercise resistance band.
What I love most: Having workout options tailored to each trimester and the option for a shorter workout on busy days.
2. the perfect pregnancy workout vol. 1
This is a challenging workout, in my opinion! It’s absolutely safe and tailored to prenatal needs, but offers varied moves that will strengthen and challenge you from a physical standpoint. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced options are given. It’s not a big budget production, but the workout is amazing. Workout requires dumbbells and a chair for support.
What I love the most: This is a GREAT workout, it will challenge your strength and stamina more than a lot of prenatal workouts.
3. Complete Pregnancy Fitness with Erin O’Brien
No equipment is needed for this high-energy workout. The workout incorporates total body toning, but keeps you moving the whole time. This is a 2-disc set. The second DVD, Postnatal rescue, eases you back into workouts after baby arrives.
What I love the most: The energy that keeps the workout flowing and having a postpartum workout included.
4. 10 Minute Solutions Prenatal Pilates
Pilates is excellent for pregnancy. It focuses on lengthening, balance, realignment, flexibility, breath, and strength – especially core, which is essential pre- and postpartum.
It is very important to do a workout that is specifically for pregnancy, however, since lots of traditional Pilates exercises are performed on the back (not safe into 2nd trimester) and could put some strain on the core and lower back area.
What I love the most: Pilates makes me feel great, and this DVD offers the option of 10 minute workouts, or you can put them together for a 50 minute workout.
5. Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga & Short Forms
Pregnancy throws your body out of alignment in many ways, and yoga is one of the best forms of exercise for restoring balance. A focus on breathing will help you not only physically, but mentally as well.
This 2-DVD set has multiple options for workout style and length.
What I love the most: Yoga feels great for your body, both during and after your workout.
6. Yoga Booty Ballet Baby On The Way
This is one of my favorite workouts for the third trimester. I initially tried it earlier in my pregnancy, and didn’t feel it was an effective workout. The end of pregnancy, as I later found out, is a very different story!
This 30-minute workout contains cardio, strength, and yoga. I feel it’s the perfect balanced workout if you’re just starting out with exercise or in your final trimester. Requires light dumbbells
What I love the most: This is one of my favorite workouts for the third trimester. It’s a complete, balanced workout that leaves me feeling re-energized, not worn out.
