I started a blog in 2010 just for fun and called it “Fitness Now”. That name stuck with me over the years as the most important message I want to give people about fitness and health: The only way to get fit and stay fit is to make the best choice in front of you right now – whenever “now” is.
You can improve your health, strength, wellness, and fitness level even if you don’t know every single thing about exercise science and nutrition or have a formal plan.
You already have the power.
Everybody needs a Nike “Just Do It” moment, or the revelation Dorothy had at the end of the Wizard of Oz, “You had the power all along my dear…you just had to learn it for yourself.”
It’s simple but not easy.
Yes, you do need good information on nutrition and exercise, and I know there’s an overwhelming amount of conflicting advice out there…
At the end of the day, you know it would be better to eat a salad and go for a walk than get a fast food cheeseburger and lay on the couch.
When we say we just “need the right plan” before we get started, what we’re really hoping is to find out the secret: a quick and painless way to eat whatever we want, not work out, and get a slammin beach body.
Unfortunately, there’s no long-term solution that works that way.
It’s simple: eat right, move more. But it’s not easy. You have to do it day after day, at least the majority of the time.
Life gets in the way. You never have enough time. You don’t always (or maybe rarely) feel like it, but you have to do it anyway.
Choices not feelings.
Over time, your life and health will reflect all the small daily choices you’ve made. Don’t put off until tomorrow what can be done right now.
Make the choice you know would be better for your health, the choice that will take you a baby step towards your goal, instead of sliding the opposite direction.
- Choose a better snack.
- Make dinner even if you’re tired.
- Get out of bed to workout even when you’d rather sleep in.
When we exercise, we push past our comfort zone to make our muscles and body systems stronger, faster, and more efficient. The same is true with your “willpower muscle”. Start to work it, make the right choices, and it will become easier over time.
We will always need each other.
Knowing what to do is just the first step. Actually doing it – and continuing consistently – is the challenging part. This is where we all need accountability and a supportive community.
We all need to be reminded, encouraged, and re-inspired. This is a lifelong journey, not an instant fix.
Do it for the right reasons.
We are inundated with marketing promises to give us the ultimate beach body in 2 weeks, or lose weight once and for all with a secret 30-day program, but that’s not what this blog is about.
Being fit and healthy is a lifelong journey; it’s not a problem that can be solved in a month. It’s not about reaching a certain number on a scale or measuring tape, it’s about more energy, optimal health, and reaching your highest potential for fitness so you can live a full life.
Who gets to decide what the perfect body looks like, anyway?
Actually, someone did decide what the perfect body for you would look like.
The creator who knitted you together in your mother’s womb decided exactly how you would look, beautifully and uniquely.
It’s up to you to honor your body, treat it well, and make the best decisions for your health, fitness and wellness – right now.
